چکیده

We present the results of a VLT observing program carried out in service mode using FORS1 on ANTU in Long Slit mode to determine the optical velocities of nearby low surface brightness galaxies. As part of our program of service observations we obtained long-slit spectra of several members of the Phoenix dwarf galaxy from which we derive an optical helio-centric radial velocity of −13 ± 9 km/s. This agrees very well with the velocity of the most promising of the HI clouds seen around Phoenix, which has a helio-centric velocity of −23 km/s, but is significantly different to the recently published optical heliocentric velocity of Phoenix of −52 ± 6 km/s of Gallart et al. (2001). Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

The Aptly Named Phoenix Dwarf Galaxy

The Local Group galaxy Phoenix has the properties of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, but an adjacent HI cloud has been recently found to be at the same radial velocity as the stars. The proximity suggests that this cloud is associated with the most recent (≤ 100 Myr) star formation in Phoenix. We have obtained relatively high sensitivity and high resolution HI imaging with the VLA with the goal of d...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars in the Phoenix Dwarf Galaxy

JHKs near-infrared photometry of stars in the Phoenix dwarf galaxy is presented and discussed. Combining these data with the optical photometry of Massey et al. allows a rather clean separation of field stars from Phoenix members. The discovery of a Mira variable (P = 425 days), which is almost certainly a carbon star, leads to an estimate of the distance modulus of 23.10 ± 0.18 that is consist...

Young tidal dwarf galaxies around the gas - rich disturbed lenticular NGC 5291 ?

NGC 5291 is an early type galaxy at the edge of the cluster Abell 3574 which drew the attention because of the unusual high amount of atomic gas (∼ 5×10 10 M) found associated to it. The HI is distributed along a huge and fragmented ring, possibly formed after a tidal interaction with a companion galaxy. We present multi-slit optical spectroscopic observations and optical/near-infrared images o...
